Colchester: Car Ban In High Street?

Posted by Aldo Pusey on Sunday, February 11, 2024

Plans for big road changes proposed in Colchester, including pedestrianising the High Street, go on show from Thursday.

The Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) are part of the Better Town Centre programme, a partnership project between Essex County Council and Colchester Borough Council, which aims to improve and prepare a rapidly growing Colchester for a positive and resilient future.

The main changes will be made in the High Street, to improve the pedestrian environment and reduce unnecessary traffic across the town centre. Between 10am and 6pm the High Street will not be accessible for any cars or delivery vehicles. To support this some access restrictions will be introduced on neighbouring streets including Head Street and North Hill. Access for everyone will remain before 10am and after 6pm, seven days a week.

A number of additional disabled parking spaces are also planned, located at a range of accessible locations across the town centre, including Colchester Borough Council operated car parks and on-street. New provision will also be made for taxis.

Local residents, businesses, user groups and transport operators have played a role in developing the proposals.

The improvements are designed to enhance the environment for shoppers, boosting the town's vitality and economic prosperity. Air quality at key locations will also be improved, along with the reliability of public transport. The changes will support future planned transport projects, including Park and Ride in Colchester.

The formal consultation period starts on Thursday 8 March 2012. Full details can be found at Colchester Library and at County Hall in Chelmsford, or online at www.engageessex.org.uk. Comments on the proposals can be submitted until 30 March 2012.

Depending on the outcome of the consultation process, on-street works are expected to take place in stages between summer and December 2012, with careful planning to minimise disruption for businesses and everyone accessing the town centre.

County Councillor Tracey Chapman, Essex County Council Cabinet Member for Highways & Transportation said: "We have been working closely in partnership with Colchester Borough Council to develop these proposals, which we hope will have a real positive impact on the Town Centre. We have consulted with interested parties during the development phase, and there will be a further opportunity to comment on the proposals during the consultation period."

Colchester Borough Council's Portfolio Holder for Renaissance, Councillor Lyn Barton said: "The proposals developed with Essex County Council and with valuable input from many town centre users will help reduce congestion and improve the environment in Colchester. Making it easier to get around is a key priority for the Council and the Better Town Centre project."
